Understanding your total collection value

Your total collection value is the market price of every bottle we have a price for, added together, plus an estimate for the bottles we don’t — and that estimate is your own collection’s average bottle price, never what you paid. You can switch the estimate off if you would rather count only the bottles we have a price for.

Each market price is the typical shop price for that bottle today, before sales tax. So your total gives a rough idea of what it might cost to buy your collection again at typical shop prices. It is a guide only, not a professional valuation — for insurance, get a professional valuation. It is not what you would get if you sold everything. Auctions take fees and merchants buy below their shelf price, so selling brings in less.

This is the most common misunderstanding about the number. If a wine has no market price, we do not fall back to what you paid for it. We use the average market price of the rest of your collection. What you paid rolls up into a separate total of its own.

  • Bottles with a market price. Each one counted at its own price. Where you have set your own price for a wine, yours is the one used.
  • Bottles without one. Each counted at your collection’s average market price — or left out, if you have switched off Estimate unpriced bottles. A wine usually has no price because it is rare, or popular in a country where our pricing data is thin.

  1. Open Home.
  2. Tap the ⋯ beside Market value.
  3. Tap About market value.

It tells you what percentage of your bottles we have market values for, what those bottles come to on their own, and the average price standing in for the rest. On Android, tap the question mark beside Market value. On app.invintory.com, hover the question mark on the home page.

Home → Market value ⋯ → About market value

The estimate is on unless someone on the collection turns it off. Switch off Estimate unpriced bottles and the total counts only the bottles we have a market price for. The values on your cellars and fridges follow the same setting, and About market value then says the other bottles aren’t counted.

iPhone: Home → your profile photo → Settings → Collection settings → Customization → Estimate unpriced bottles

On iPad, tap your profile photo in the top bar, then Settings, and pick the collection under Collections. On iPhone with an older iOS, tap Profile, then the gear in the top right, and pick it there.

Android: Home → your profile photo → Settings → Collection settings → Customization → Estimate unpriced bottles
Web: app.invintory.com/settings → your collection → Customization → Estimate unpriced bottles

The setting is for the whole collection, so everyone on it sees the same total. In the apps only the owner and admins see the switch. On the web, editors can change it too.

Counted Not counted
Bottles sitting in your cellars and fridges now Bottles you have removed — consumed, gifted, sold and the rest
Bottles from a delivery that has arrived Bottles still in transit on a delivery
Every bottle size, priced for its own format Bottles on a purchase you have not finished entering
  • Market prices update when new market data arrives, so the figure can move even when you touched nothing.
  • Removing a high-value bottle lowers it twice over: that bottle’s price leaves, and the average standing in for your uncovered bottles falls with it.
  • Market prices are converted into your base currency at the current exchange rate, so rates move the total too.
  • Someone on the collection switched Estimate unpriced bottles on or off.
